Endodontic therapy, also known as root canal treatment is an area of dentistry aiming for the prevention and treatment of problems involving the tissue around the tooth root. endodontic therapy therefore means any treatment involving the tooth pulp.

When is root canal treatment advised?

It is advised in cases where decay has reached the pulp chamber, and bacteria have already infected it, causing sensitivity and sometimes pain to the patient. It is also advised if the pulp chamber has opened due to an accident, is inflamed, the nerves and blood vessels have been absorbed, the tooth has died, the tooth causes mild temporary pain, or is sensitive to heat. In some cases, the dead tooth pulp can cause an inflammation in the bone around the root, which can present a number of symptoms: pain, the swelling of the face, or even fever. Root canal treatment might be necessary in case of gum disease or when making a tooth crown.

What is root canal treatment and how is it done?

The tooth consists of the crown and one or more roots located in the jawbone. The roots are responsible for fixing the teeth to the jawbone. Inside the tooth is the tooth pulp, which contains nerves. During root canal treatment, the pulp is removed from the pulp chamber and root chamber, followed by root filling, which means filling the cleaned canal with filling material.

Thus, the first step of the process is the opening, mapping and widening of the root canal, and the final step is the filling. Our teeth (depending on the type) may have 1-4 root canals, making root canal a very demanding procedure.
